ABOUT BURY GRAMMAR SCHOOL
Two Bury Grammar Schools worked together after the end of the nineteenth century to provide a unique education for generations of outstanding girls and boys. The roots of the Schools go much further back, however, to about 1570. The emphasis is now and has always been always upon academic excellence and the all-round development of the individual child. The Schools’ alumni/ae have achieved distinction world wide -- si monumentum requiris, circumspice. Old Clavians are characterised by their integrity, their spirit of inquiry, their no-nonsense approach to tough problems, and by their contributions to society.
There is an official history of the Schools, written by Dr. Ian Fallows.
About a hundred years ago, when girls joined the boys in a new building and two Schools began to work independently but side by side under a joint governing body, the Schools entered an important new phase of development. The tradition of independent, jointly governed senior schools working side by side came to an end in May 2018 when the Girls' School ceased to exist as a distinct entity. What used to be Bury Grammar School Girls' (BGSG) is now just a senior section for girls in a single school encompassing a so-called family of schools that include a co-educational Kindergarten, a co-educational Infant School, single sex Junior and Senior Schools, and a co-educational Sixth Form.
